Summer Update 1

This will be a long update since Spring Break so I will cut off the details. After a lengthy process I was able to have the field school paid by my school, but I owe the school back for it. Since I couldn't get a co-signer, that means I have to use my financial aid to pay it off...not the best option for me, but it has to be done I guess.

Also, I got accepted for my research topic in which I already used the first portion to pay for travel. I hope the second check comes back in time because if it does not, I will be truly upset and have no money when I arrive in Menorca (plus a looong wait). Here's hoping things run smoothly the next two weeks. On that topic I already ordered the Human Osteology Lab and Field Manual for cheap (used books). The Manual will be a great help to me and I will use that towards my research topic. I was given a list of items I can take with me which are:
  • Camera
  • Swimsuit
  • Beach Towel
  • slippers
  • old clothes
  • stationary: pens, pencils, paper, USB flash drives
  • Laptops/netbooks
  • money
  • excavation gear: hat, gloves, knee pads
  • other: toiletries, mosquito repellent, sunblock
So far I have everything I need except a beach towel, excavation gear and mosquito repellent/sunblock. Don't think I'll need the mosquito repellent because I attract them even if I have it on. :( Learned it the hard way in the Dominican Republic.

As I wait two more weeks until Spain, I am spending time with my daughter. She is becoming a handful and is attracted to my gadgets (netbook, iphone, etc). I gave her an old sidekick for her to play. It's too bad I can't use it in Europe (service for them is discontinued) otherwised I would've saved good money by purchasing only a SIM card and minutes for 15 Euros. The search goes on!

Spring break

Well I have prepared my research proposal with budget updated. I hope I get in because this is a very competitive thesis paper I am putting together!

In other news I was slightly worried that I would not be able to pass my second exam. Chemistry isn't my favorite subject but because this is Biology I manage to pass it with a solid B. I was worried because I did not do well on the short answer portions but I was very happy that I did really well on the multiple choice questions. That really helped maintain my expected grade for the class. I am more worried about the final exam which is comprehensive. I have two more days to prepare for my Ancient Egypt class (exam is on Wednesday). I still have a couple of readings to do...
Also I need to prepare my presentations for my other Archaeology class. I should set up the questions soon after not being able to get a hold of my class partner...not fun. I have to start the presentation on April 1 without him.

Now that classes start again tomorrow I really feel like wanting a few more days of break so I can finish my mask for the Banquet. That talk will be saved there: http://perlesonne.blogspot.com/
Any artistic work, make up, food and photography go in there. I will present my mask in my other blog. ;)

Research Opportunity

The past week I recieved an opportunity that unfolded itself to me. Originally, I was going to a Field School in Spain to earn academic credit. I was recommended by several professors to recieve a research grant to help cover the cost of the program provided that I come up with a research topic. I went through this advice and spoke to the directors of the program and they were very willing to help me with my work. Instead of 20 days doing field work, I will spend 40 days in Spain in the summer for research...I am surprised and happy to not take advantage of the situation.

To those who are unfamiliar what Field School is, a Field School is a prepatory trainning course for students who are in the Archaeology major. It's where future Archaeologists learn the basics of excavation techniques, record keeping, digs, lab work, etc. It is a professionally scientific field even though we are lumped together with Liberal Arts...sad I know...

I have been busy this whole semester in helping out with the International Banquet coming up. I am re-working on my national costume and hope that it will be the best I ever made because there is going to be a little addition to my work but it won't be revealed until the day of the Banquet. I am also swamped with work especially in course work. I am doing well so far in most of my classes but this one particular class I have a slight trouble keeping up. I'll do my best but I expect to get a B from this class..even though my assignments will be handed very late... :(
